Mother who left newborn in nativity scene in NY won't be charged

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Police in New York City say a mother who left her newborn baby in a Christmas manger at a church in Queens earlier this week won't be charged with a crime.

Authorities said that the mother felt her newborn was in a warm place and would be found safe.

A custodian at the church found the baby boy on Monday. He was wrapped in towels with his umbilical cord still attached. He was just four or five hours old when found.

Police say the mother returned the next morning to make sure her baby had been found.

New York's Safe Haven Law says mothers can drop off newborn babies at a church, hospital, police or fire station.
