Viral video shows two men fighting at Mall St. Matthews Thanksgiving night

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A video posted on Twitter showing two men fighting at a crowded food court at the Mall St. Matthews has gone viral.

The video was shot Thanksgiving night and shows the two men punching and slapping each other as a crowd watches. A woman is knocked to the floor before a security guard broke up the fight. At one point during the video it appears one of the onlookers punched one of the men involved in the fight.

Fox News provided a clip of the video shown in the player above. It was originally posted by an individual identified as "@Daddyweaknd."

At this time it is not known why the men were fighting or if they face any charges.

A call was placed to St. Matthews police, and officers responded within a couple of minutes, but by then both men had already left the mall. We watched the video with a police officer who told us they believe the fight may have been staged -- possibly because several people in the crowd could be heard shouting "Worldstar" -- a website that gathers and posts fight videos.

Regardless of how it happened, police say the fight could have caused shoppers to panic.

"A crowded shopping mall, at any time of the day ... and then suddenly this kind of thing breaks out -- disorder for lack of a better term. If folks aren't aware of what's going on, they're going to panic," said Officer Dennis McDonald with St. Matthews police.

"This kind of behavior is not going to be tolerated," McDonald said, adding later that, "This kind of behavior can escalate out of control and other people could be injured or hurt. It's just not something we think is funny at all."

"It can get dangerous for everybody," said Mekhi Jackson, who saw the video. "We don't need to be fighting or anything."

But after watching the video, police are wondering whether this was all an act.

"There are elements of this video that would kind of indicate it may have been staged," McDonald said.

Now police are hoping to identify the men shown fighting in the video as well as the person who recorded it. If you recognize anyone in the video you're asked to call St. Matthews police at 502-893-9000.

"This kind of behavior is not going to be tolerated," McDonald said. "If, in fact, this was a staged event, it's not going to be tolerated."

Dee Snyder, marketing manager for the Mall St. Matthews, released the following statement on Friday:

"The incident that occurred on Thanksgiving night was an isolated incident that was immediately handled by security. The safety and well-being of our shoppers, retailers and employees are always our top priorities. The mall has a customized public safety program that entails different measures for various scenarios. We do not discuss our public safety measures because doing so would compromise our efforts. We are expecting a busy and successful holiday shopping season, and I want to emphasize, safety and security are our priorities every day."
