Donations needed for 'Take What You Can Tote' giveaway

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- It's a place where families turn for help, to make sure their kids have the clothing and items they need for school.

April Mendez visits the 15th District PTA’s Clothing Assistance Program twice a year. She shops for her daughter and her 3-year-old son Ramiro.

“I'm thankful for it because I'm low-income and I can't provide like some people can, and I'm using some of these items for Christmas, to re-gift and repackage,” said April Mendez.

The Clothing Assistance Program is located behind Central High School’s football stadium on South 15th Street.

It provides new and used clothing for needy children who attend Jefferson County Public Schools.

However, for the second year in a row, it’s not just parents with students getting the extra help around the holiday season. The PTA is helping put on the ‘Take what You Can Tote’ clothing giveaway. It's for anyone in the community in need of clothing.

Last year nearly 6,000 people received help.

“There were so many hugs and thank you's and tears. It was very emotional,” said Heather Wampler, President of the 15th District PTA.

On Saturday, Dec. 12, organizers will host the event, giving families several bags to take whatever they need.

However, there's a lot that needs to happen to get ready in time. Officials say what they need the most right now are donations. They’re in need of gently used clothing to be given to both kids and adults.

They say some families will use the items for Christmas.

“This definitely makes a huge impact, and those kids when they open it up on Christmas morning are so excited to see that. Even though it's gently used, to them it's brand new and it's just like gold,” said Heather Wampler.

With donations from the community, they're hoping those like April Mendez will get some added help this holiday season.

Mendez says she's already thankful for what she's received so far.

“It's a blessing. It really is,” said Mendez.

The ‘Take What You Can Tote’ giveaway will be held from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Dec. 12 outside the Clothing Assistance Program, located at 319 South 15th Street.

Clothing will be available on a first-come, first-served basis.

You can donate items by dropping them off at the Clothing Assistance Program, Monday thru Friday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

You can also make arrangements with Heather Wampler to have donations picked up if needed. Wampler can be reached at 502-671-9451.
