The former Cardinal head coach is set to return as head coach at Kentucky State.
LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB)-- Former U of L Head Football Coach John L. Smith is returning to the Commonwealth to be the head coach at Kentucky State, as first reported by footballscoop.com.
Fort Lewis College in Durango, Colorado announced today that Smith resigned as head football coach there. He's been the coach for the Skyhawks the last three seasons, taking over an 0-10 team and going 14-19 overall, including a 7-4 mark this past season.
Like Fort Lewis, Kentucky State is a Division II program. The Thorobreds went 3-7 this season, including 2-3 in the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference West Division.
Smith has an overall record of 143-109 as a head coach at Idaho, Louisville, Michigan State, Arkansas and Fort Lewis. He was 41-21 at U of L in five years with five straight bowl appearances and back-to-back Conference USA titles in 2000 and 2001.
