Community mourns Louisville's rising number of violence victims

Posted: Updated:

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- There have been 76 homicides and 4,000 violent crimes reported in Louisville so far this year.

On Wednesday night, the faith community gathered to hold a prayer service to remember the victims of violence in our city.

Louisville Police Chief Steve Conrad says the number of shootings is up some 47 percent from this same time last year. But he also says Louisville is part of a national trend.

In the U.S., 39 of the 60 largest cities have seen an increase in the number of homicides this year.

"You know the one thing I do personally is each and every day I pray for our community and I pray for the victims of crime," Conrad said.

Outside of the service, crosses with the names of homicide victims in Louisville this year were placed in front of the church.
