Sheriff's dept.: Fern Creek H.S. student subdued with Taser, charged with assault on police officer

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A school resource officer used a Taser to "drive-stun" a 17-year-old Fern Creek High School student after an assault on the officer at the school Thursday afternoon. The student now is charged with several offenses.

The student punched a Jefferson County sheriff's deputy in the face and kicked the officer in the chest and groin, sheriff's dept. Lt. Col. Carl Yates said. The officer than placed the Taser against the student's body and applied the shock, rather than firing the pins at the student during a scuffle.

The incident took place in the school office after the student had become unruly and "aggressive" in the lunch room and did not respond to efforts from staff and the officer to "de-escalate" or calm him down. The officer is sore but suffered no other injuries, and no one else was hurt, Yates said.

The student is charged as a juvenile with four offenses that include assault on a police officer, terroristic threatening and resisting arrest, Yates said.

He was taken to Kosair Children's Hospital for an examination, which is standard procedure after a Taser deployment. Officers later took the student to Jefferson County Youth Center, where he will await a juvenile court hearing, Yates said.

The officer had prior encounters with the student which ended peacefully. He was surprised at the student's behavior in the incident Thursday, Yates said.

Bonnie Hackbarth, a spokeswoman for Jefferson County Public Schools, told WDRB earlier Thursday that a "Fern Creek student's behavior had to be addressed by an SRO today, but there was no arrest."

Hackbarth could not be reached for further comment Thursday night.
