Ky. State Capitol prepares for Bevin's inauguration ceremony

Posted: Updated:

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- At the Kentucky State Capitol, it's beginning to look a lot like inauguration season as Crews get the Capitol ready for the big day.

Matt Bevin will be sworn in on the steps of the capitol building at 2 p.m. on Dec. 8, But the inaugural events actually begin the night before and go well into the evening.

The inauguration committee has been hard at work for weeks, planning and raising money to pay for the event.

"We had our first meeting two days after the election," Inauguration committee co-chair Kelly Knight said.

And it's been non-stop ever since.

It's a day that begins the night before in a private ceremony then, early Tuesday, morning the first of many Kentucky traditions kicks off.

The first public event --  a community worship service -- happens at the Frankfort Convention Center at 8.

At 10, there's a parade through Frankfort, ending at the Capitol. The governor and the first family plan to walk the route.

Then, as 57 others have done before, the new governor takes the ceremonial oath on the Capitol steps.

It's a day filled with traditional, but also with opportunities for the new governor's personal touch.

The day ends with a welcome party at the Ky History Center, the Grand March in the Capitol Rotunda and a final Bevin touch, a private Boots and Bells dance back at the convention center.

Some past inaugurations have suffered through bitter cold and snow, but right now the forecast looks good for Matt Bevin with mostly sunny skies and highs in the 50s.
