Truck that hit LMPD cruiser Thursday night was stolen, driver still at large

LOUISVILLE, Ky (WDRB) -- A Louisville Metro Police officer is recovering after being hit by a cargo truck that we now know was stolen.

Police say the officer is okay but they still don’t have a suspect, after the driver of the truck ran from the scene.

The collision happened just before 7 p.m. Thursday. The  officer was driving south on Floyd Street when a truck turned and hit her cruiser, according to police.

"They ran into a parking garage apparently but they didn't catch them,” said Tony Pittelko, an employee at Richards Electric Supply.

The truck is owned by Richards Electric Supply but employees there say the suspect is none of their drivers.

"We have a lot of customers calling asking which driver it was and we just want to make that clear it wasn't any of our drivers. We don't know who it was,” he told WDRB.

They took pictures at the scene, showing damage that was done before the truck was wrecked.

“It was hot-wired. Someone broke the passenger side window out and tore some wires out, hot-wired it and took it for a joy ride,” said Pittelko.

Pittelko says the alleged thief only made it four blocks in the stolen truck before crashing.

"They were good at hot wiring but not good at driving,” he said.

No surveillance video has been released.

“No idea. We have cameras but it was too dark to really see anything,” Pittelko told WDRB.

The truck is now in the shop being repaired.

The officer was taken to the hospital with minor injuries but is expected to be okay.

Sources say the suspect ran to a nearby parking garage and some clothing was left behind.

Police had K-9 searching the area Thursday night.

"We just want to make sure the guy is caught, the officer is safe and that she's going to be okay and move on,” Pittelko said.
