Cards, Toppers to play second round matches Saturday. Wildcats end season at 21-10.
LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Louisville advanced to the second round of the NCAA Volleyball tournament with a 3-1 victory over Belmont on Friday night at Cardinal Arena.
Tess Clark hit .700 en route to 14 kills while Erin Fairs had 15 kills. Katie George had 48 assists as Louisville turned back the Bruins, 25-20, 22-25, 25-23, 25-21.
"Obviously, we're extremely excited about our first round match and to get a win," said Louisville head coach Anne Kordes. "We knew that Belmont was going to give us all that we could handle and they proved that. What a team of fighters. It's a heck of a group and it's an honor to get the opportunity to play them. So, we are happy to be able to walk out of here with a win."
U of L meets Illinois Saturday at 7:00 pm at Cardinal Arena. The Illini beat Southern Illinois in three straight sets.
In other first-round tournament action, Kentucky was surprised by American University in three straight sets in Columbus, Ohio. Western Kentucky advanced to round two with a 3-0 win over Arizona in Provo, Utah. They'll meet BYU Saturday at 9:00 pm.
