Man who hit pregnant mother and children sentenced to 20 years in prison

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- The driver who hit a pregnant mother and her children while they were leaving the Yum! Center last year has been sentenced to 20 years in prison.

Sara Neathamer and her two children were hit by a drunk driver in September 2014 while leaving a "Disney on Ice" show at the KFC Yum Center.

Both kids were injured.

Neathamer was pregnant with a son at the time, and delivered prematurely. She says it forever changed the baby's life.

The man responsible was 65-year-old Russell Mullins.

During his sentencing on Monday, Mullins apologized to Neathamer.

"I would like to let her know that I am God-sorry for the heinous crime that I committed against her and her kids," Mullins said. "I'd like to apologize and let her know that I'm God-sorry for the incident. I'll be praying for her here on out, and please forgive me."

Mullins accepted a plea deal in October on assault, wanton endangerment and DUI charges.

"Your actions have obviously caused extensive and long-lasting harm to your victims and you're gonna have to live with that," said Judge Olu Stevens.

For Sara Neathamer, it's now a chance to move on with her kids, although she admits it's hard.

"At least he'll be able to walk and talk in jail and have conversations and all that, and my son will never be able to do that," Neathamer said.

Neathamer says she's just thankful the case is finally over.

"I'm glad that he apologized," Neathamer said. "It made me feel better. At least he realized what he did. I don't know if I'll ever forgive him for what he did."

Mullins will receive credit for time served. He has been behind bars since September of 2014.
