Louisville's faith community again expresses support for Syrian refugees

Posted: Updated:

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Some people in Louisville say the city should welcome Syrian refugees into the community.

On Tuesday, faith leaders from across Louisville gathered to reiterate their support of refugees coming to the area, despite several states saying they are no longer welcome.

"No religion makes faithfulness an option when it comes inconvenient or unsafe," said Highlands Baptist Church Pastor Joseph Phelps. God's love and human love are always risky and costly. Absolute security is unattainable and unrealistic."

Phelps and other pastors are standing in unity at the Kentucky Refugee Ministries, which helps resettle refugees.

The group includes Christians, Jews and Muslims, all joining together urging people of all faiths to be led by courage and compassion, not fear.

At a time when many states oppose taking in Syrian refugees and presidential candidate Donald Trump unveiled his plan to ban Muslims from entering the United States, the group says it's important for people to practice what they preach.

Kentucky Governor Matt Bevin and Indiana Governor Mike Pence have said both states will not accept Syrian refugees.

Louisville's religious leaders say that policy violates one of the central tenants of faith traditions, which is the duty to welcome the stranger.

Now more than ever, the Muslim leader of one of the 11 local Islamic centers says its critical for people to understand one thing. The ISIS terrorists whose horrific attacks hatched fear around the world do not share the beliefs of the true Islamic faith.
