Gov. Matt Bevin spends first full day at work out of public view

FRANKFORT, Ky. (WDRB) -- The bunting is still up at the Capitol Building, but the party is over. Now, it's down to work for Gov. Matt Bevin.

After a day filled with public events, the governor spent this day after the inauguration behind closed doors in his new office.

“We had a kickoff meeting with our cabinet and senior staff just to talk about first day duties, just getting operational to make sure we can function and work as a team, and work efficiently, Bevin Communications Director Jessica Ditto told WDRB News.

As work crews were busy clearing out and cleaning up after the festivities, Bevin still needs to fill out the rest of his cabinet.

“We're doing it, as we have been, in a very deliberate manner, selecting the right people, who are best qualified for the role,” said Ditto.

To begin making good on his inaugural promises, Bevin is having to hit the ground running.

He needs to present a budget to the General Assembly next month.

“We have a lot on our plate, but we’re ready and looking forward to tackling those challenges,” said Ditto.

In the meantime, Bevin's new staff, many of whom are new to the Capitol, face the challenge of finding the office supplies.

“It's always a challenge to walk in, brand new. We have a lot of folks who have never worked in state government, but we also have veterans, people who have worked in government and know what is expected. We’re just making sure everyone is on the same page. We’re just glad to be here,” said Ditto.

When asked when Gov. Bevin's first news conference or public appearance might be, Ditto would only say, “Stay tuned.”
