Police investigating after fatal shooting in Shawnee neighborhood

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Police are investigating after a young black male was fatally shot in the Shawnee neighborhood Friday afternoon.

The shooting was reported around 1 p.m. in the 600 block of S. 43rd Street, near Elliott Avenue.

Witnesses told police they heard gunshots and saw a person down in an alley.

The victim, who has not yet been identified, was pronounced dead at the scene.

This is the city's 77th murder this year, and LMPD spokesman Dwight Mitchell says it's especially tough when someone is murdered close to the holidays.

"It doesn't matter what day it is," Mitchell said. "Certainly it's more tragic during the holidays. This is a tune that's been played too many times in our city. You've heard me say many times that we can't legislate morality. Morality is something that has to be within the heart of individuals. Apparently the individuals that did this have no regard for human life."

Anyone with information is asked to call 574-LMPD.
