Outer Loop auto shop hit three times by criminals in just 30 days

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) – A local auto shop has been hit by criminals not once, not twice, but three times in the span of just 30 days.

The sign for JP's Auto Care Center on Outer Loop says "Coming Soon," but soon keeps getting pushed back.

“We're really struggling to try and get in,” Owner Sam Padilla said.

The first setback came over three weeks ago, when a man and woman in an older white SUV broke in and stole tools. Padilla and his fiancée Megan Maiden tried to stop them before she was run over, and the two people in the SUV got away. Since then, the auto business has been broken into two more times.

“[They] tried to steal one of the vehicles inside that they stole keys to the first time,” Padilla said.

Padilla says they did not get away with his car, but 90 percent of his tools are gone. He thinks it's the same group of people, but is not shocked by their audacity.

“They're just criminals, and that's what criminals do,” he said.

As for his fiancée, she is still reminded of the first break-in, thanks to her bruises and cast.

“I'm not scared. I mean I'm definitely very tired of, you know, all the theft and breaking-in and everything,” Maiden said.

Despite the stroke of bad luck, Padilla says his business neighbors continue to rally behind him.

“Don't give up on us," he said. "We want you here ... so that's kind of reassuring to have people say that stuff to you after something so bad."

In the meantime, he's just letting police do their job as he continues work on opening his second auto care location.

“They’ll get caught, and if they don't get them, karma will,” Padilla said. “We're not going to let them beat us, we're just not. They're not going to win.”

Padilla hopes that with his new security system, the break-ins will stop. He says the auto shop was supposed to be opening next week, but now a more realistic date is set around the first of the year.
