After sluggish first half, UK offense heats up en route to 72-58 win over Arizona State

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- It was close for a half at Rupp Arena on Saturday, but the UK offense caught fire in the second, and the Wildcats pulled away from Arizona State, 72-58.

UK shot horribly in the first half ... just 1-11 from the 3-point line.

Arizona State, coached by former Duke point guard Bobby Hurley, came into Rupp on Saturday with a 6-2 record. A buzzer-beating 3-pointer had the Sun Devils within one point at the break, 32-31.

But after that sluggish first half, UK freshmen Isaiah Briscoe and Jamaal Murray hit a few shots in the opening minutes of the second half, stretching the Sun Devil defense in the process.

The Cats ultimately shot 43 percent for the game (6-21 from 3). They were led by Murray with 17 points and five assists. Sophomore point guard Tyler Ulis added 12 points, five rebounds and six assists.

"We just have a long way to go," head coach John Calipari said after the game. "This is a hard process."

Calipari still isn't getting get much production from freshman Skal Labissiere, who though highly-touted when he got to Lexington this season, has struggled with foul trouble much of the season so far. He finished Saturday's game with 0 points, 0 rebounds, one block and four fouls in 13 minutes.

"He came from Haiti," Calipari said. "He played basketball for a year and a half, and then he played in church league for two years. He's never been through any of this. This is all new to him."

Now 9-1, UK has a week before traveling to Brooklyn, N.Y., to play Ohio State.
