Slaughter Elementary students surprised by unexpected gifts

Posted: Updated:

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Children got a surprise no one saw coming today at Slaughter Elementary.

Academy Sports donated 30 bikes and helmets to children, grades Kindergarten through fifth grade. All the students thought there would be a winner from an essay contest about respect, for both boys and girls -- but as it turned out, anyone who entered got a bike.

"We are just so grateful that we get the chance to bring some happiness to kids this time of year, and to give a gift that is going to get them outside and get them active and playing when the weather is nice in the spring," said Amy Blevins-Morgan of Academy Sports and Outdoors.

This is the fourteenth year for the academy's bike donation. Four-thousand bikes will be distributed this year.
