LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A local jail never thought its toy drive for inmates' children would be so successful.

The Hardin County Jail houses 600 inmates. On a slow day, a dozen kids might come in to visit relatives. But that number jumps to about 50 kids a day around Christmas.

Now, thanks to the efforts of Hardin County Jailer Danny Allen and other volunteers, nearly 500 children will receive Christmas gifts.

Allen decided to collect toys to spread Christmas cheer to children who come in.

Allen says kids are often upset when visiting their parents in jail especially around Christmas -- and the parents aren't able to buy their children presents.

"The majority of our inmates are people that made bad choices. These small children shouldn't have to suffer from what their parents done or other relatives in any way," said Allen.

Volunteers were assembling the final gifts on Wednesday; presents will be passed out to kids visiting next week.
