U of L adds extra security for basketball games at Yum! Center

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) – The University of Louisville is taking no chances when it comes to fan safety at basketball games.

In addition to LMPD officers at the front entrance, security workers asked people to remove heavy coats, screened them with a metal detector wand and checked purses. These added measures come from the University itself and not from the KFC Yum! Center.

“Hey, I'm all for it. You know it's an easy target. So the more security the better,” Robyn Zapp said.

“I want to feel safe, so I have no problem if it takes a few minutes longer,” Scott Davis said.

School Officials say the precaution is necessary to make people feel safe in light of recent terror attacks around the world, like those in Paris and San Bernardino.

The fans agree.

“Considering what has happened recently, it's one of those situations where you're a lot better off being safe,” Nick McIntosh said.

“The way the world is now, it seems like everyone is trying to be a little bit safer,” Rick Bon said.

Yum! Center policy already restricts backpacks, laser pens and weapons -- among other items -- but U of L officials felt more needed to be done.

“Obviously when there are things happening in the nation and things of concern, people look at different ways to keep people safe,” Senior Associate Athletic Director for Media Relations Kenny Klein told WDRB News.

“It's not a bad thing and if it keeps us safe I'm all for it,” Tammy Davis said.

“Going through security, they're just doing their job and I'm thankful,” McIntosh said.

While the extra security was provided through the University of Louisville, The Yum! Center plans on rolling out its own new security plan with metal detectors at the start of the New Year.
