Louisville man convicted of murdering two people sentenced to life in prison

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A Louisville man found guilty of murder has been sentenced to life in prison, with eligibility for parole in 25 years, according to WDRB's Emily Mieure, who was in the courtroom.

The sentence for Brian Edmonds came down from Jefferson County Circuit Court Judge Mary Shaw Monday afternoon.

On Friday, Edmonds was convicted of gunning down two cousins, 22-year-old Curtis Smith and 37-year-old Deshone Henry. Smith and Henry were killed in 2011, in the Park DuValle neighborhood.

Prosecutors say Edmonds confessed to the crimes during a phone call.

"I think we're satisfied. I think justice was done. This was an agreement where he waived appeals so it's final,” said Frank Dahl, prosecutor.

The two cousins were shot and killed on Beech Street on December 10, 2011.

"Four years we've been going through this,” said Hazel Smith, victim’s mother.

Smith says Edmonds was a family friend at the time of the murders.

She says she has nothing against his family but she wants him to pay for what he did.

"Life. He don't deserve to get out,” she told WDRB.

“The family can hopefully move on and be happy that at least some justice was served,” said Dahl.

Edmonds was eligible for the death penalty but Prosecutor Frank Dahl said life in prison is better suited in this case.

"It was a discussion I had with Tom Wine, the commonwealth's attorney. With each of the victim's families, we talked at length and thought this decision where he'll have to spend the rest of his life behind bars is satisfactory for this case,” said Dahl.

Defense attorneys Ted Shouse and Annie O'Connell declined to comment.

"I thought they tried a great case but ultimately the evidence was against them,” Dahl told WDRB.
