Residents opposed to methane plant in west Louisville deliver statement to Mayor Fischer

Posted: Updated:

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Protesters of a methane plant in West Louisville gathered outside Metro Hall Monday to send a message to the mayor.

The group passed along a letter, with more than 50 signatures, to the mayor's office.

The protesters, including local environmentalists and church leaders, don't live in West Louisville but gathered in support of those who do.

In the past, residents of West Louisville have publicly protested a methane plant being built in the residential neighborhood.

On Monday, protesters said those opposing the plant have already shown evidence of the increased harm a methane plant would add to an already polluted area.

"There has been a long, ugly history of locating our dirtiest facilities in west Louisville despite the opposition from the people who live there," said David Horvath, who is part of an ad hoc coalition to ask the mayor to listen to the people of west Louisville and oppose locating the Heaven Hill methane plant near residences in West Louisville.

"More of us who are white and do not live in west Louisville need to stand on the side of our sisters and brothers of color most impacted by this and say enough is enough," said Carla F. Wallace of Louisville Showing Up for Racial Justice.

Proponents of the plant have said the tanks are sealed, so there would be no noticeable smell.

Supporters have also said the plant would bring more jobs to west Louisville.

A spokesperson with Mayor Fischer's office said the Mayor looks forward to reading the letter.
