Employees at UPS powering through busiest day of the year

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Today is the busiest day of the year for Louisville based UPS.

With more people doing their holiday shopping online, there are more packages to ship. UPS predicts they will deliver more than 630-million packages from black Friday to New Years Eve.

UPS officials forecast 36 million of those packages will be delivered on Tuesday.

Tammy Jones of Louisville says, she was pleased to receive all packages on time this year.  "I didn't ship any but my family lives in Virginia and they shipped Christmas for the kids," she said. "They're here before Christmas."

Annetta Wells also received her package on time this year.  "I ordered from Amazon and it only took about a week so I was in good shape," said Wells.  "Yes, I was pleased, I didn't have any problems. Nobody took my package," she said.

Locally, UPS hired about 1,500 employees to help with the holiday rush.

The hiring started back in September and continued into the second week of December.

In addition to hiring on more employees, the company also added extra jets and trucks this year.

Last year on the busiest delivery day, more than 4 million packages were sorted at Louisville's Worldport's hub and shipped across the country.

"(The package) is going to leave Louisville, and eventually go to its destination city," said Jeff Wafford, UPS Spokesperson.  "It’ll be put on a brown package car and be delivered to the doorstep," he said.

UPS officials say more people are taking advantage of the UPS Access Point service this year.

If you choose that option, instead of landing on your doorstep, your package goes straight to one of UPS' Access Point locations where it's held until you can pick it up.

UPS says that helps ensure packages are safe and secure, not sitting on your doorstep while you're away.
