KYTC employee dies in first fatal work zone accident in almost 5 years

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A Kentucky Transportation Cabinet worker was killed in Allen County Tuesday.

It's the first work zone death in nearly five years in Kentucky.

Investigators say a trailer that came loose hit an oncoming truck, causing the pickup to spin into the construction zone. Titus Morris and Jeffery Harrison were hit while working on a bridge.

Morris, 34, later died at the hospital.

“I am deeply saddened by the tragic accident that took the life of one of our state highway workers and injured another. On behalf of the Commonwealth of Kentucky, I ask for your prayers and support for the families, friends and colleagues who will need comfort during this difficult time,” said Gov. Matt Bevin.

Morris was a Highway Equipment Operator IV with the Allen County maintenance facility. He was a 15-year employee of the cabinet. Jeffery Harrison started working for KYTC in 2006.

The last KYTC work-related death was in Magoffin County in January 2011.
