Flooding problems continue in New Albany neighborhood after heavy rains, pipe failure

Posted: Updated:

NEW ALBANY, Ind. (WDRB) -- A pipe failure coupled with heavy rains is leading to flooding in a New Albany neighborhood.

Officials say nearly non-stop rain all weekend caused the stormwater pipe that runs under I-64 near Cherry Street to fail.

The back-up is already causing flooding issues for homes in the area, but there's no word on exactly how many homes could be affected.

We're told the pipe is state-owned, and is about 50 years old.

Joseph Ham with the New Albany Stormwater Department says crews and inspectors have been on site throughout the night working to fix the problem.

"This pipe definitely will have to be repaired," Ham said.

Nearby neighbors say this is an ongoing issue.

"Yeah, the pipe did collapse and it's a state issue, but that's not the only problem," said Susan Roach. "This has been going on for quite awhile, and we have called city officials on this. And they don't do anything. So we'd like to see them come out and do what they need to do, and keep these drains clear."

In an email, New Albany spokesman Mike Hall released the following statement:

Last night, state inspectors arrived on site. Contractors were also on site to begin the excavating and clearing process. Crews were able to improve the flow, but the repair is not complete. Slippery bank conditions have prevented heavy excavating equipment from being put into service. The excavation work should have improved drainage conditions, but full repair work will resume in the next couple days as the bank begins to dry and conditions allow.

It is unclear if the 1,700-foot pipe will need to be totally replaced. We do know about 300 feet of it is affected by the blockage.
