Indiana Senator wants people to use restroom that matches birth gender

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- An Indiana lawmaker wants to require people to use the restroom or dressing room of their birth gender.

State Senator Jim Tomes' bill would make it a crime to intentionally use a public restroom or locker room that doesn't match a person's biological gender. Violators would face up to a year in jail and $5,000 fine.

The transgender community is outraged.

"He needs to sit down with transgender people and their families and learn what being transgender is really about -- understand the terminology, the biology and everything that goes along with it," said Annette Gross an LGBT parent supporter.

Senator Tomes says the bill doesn't target transgender people but represents people with concerns about a changing world and how it could affect their next trip to the bathroom.
