UPDATE: Truck driver that caused Paoli bridge collapse apologizes for 'mistake'

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- The future of a historic Paoli bridge is uncertain after a truck driver tried to cross it, causing it to collapse.

Mary Lambright, 23, tried to drive over the iron bridge in Paoli on Christmas Day but her truck was too tall and too heavy.

That resulted in the historic structure collapsing.

"There have been a few accidents on that bridge but nothing that major,” said Det. Brandon Mesarosh, with Paoli Police.

Mesarosh said Lambright is facing three different traffic infractions and a misdemeanor.

The maximum penalty for the reckless driving charge would be a $1,000 fine and 180 days in jail.

"She'll have the opportunity to go to court and fight the tickets if she wanted to,” said Mesarosh.

Officials say her truck was carrying thousands of bottles of water and its weight was nearly six times the posted limit.

"You need to obey all posted traffic signs and traffic laws. When you get your driver's license, you're made aware of these things and you need to obey them,” he told WDRB.

Lambright told police she saw the six-ton weight limit sign but didn't know how that translated to pounds.

"One of the biggest things in completing your log book when you're driving a truck is you have a certain weight limit that you can reach prior to leaving with your load even,” said Mesarosh.

Lambright is from the area but she didn't want to do an on camera interview with WDRB.

She told WDRB reporter Emily Mieure she's sorry it happened and that it was a mistake.

She says there's a chance she'll lose her commercial driver's license. She also said her truck didn’t have any major damages.

Locals have been stopping by to take pictures of the collapsed bridge, which sits just off the downtown square and was built in 1880.

Officials say it's too early to know what type of coverage insurance will offer, but engineers will examine the bridge next week.

Orange County commissioners will have a meeting next Wednesday about how to proceed.

Lambright is charged with reckless operation of a tractor trailer, plus three other infractions and is scheduled to be arraigned on Jan. 25.
