LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- The mother of a teenager hurt during the weekend chaos at Mall St. Matthews describes it as the most terrifying thing she’s ever experienced.

Wynette Young said she was with her 16-year-old son, Christopher at the mall on Saturday evening as he shopped for new shoes.

“We heard people screaming. We look up, we see people running toward us,” Young said. “People were pushing, running, on top of us. We had no control of ourselves. I ended up on the jewelry store floor at Zale’s. I looked over and didn’t see my son and I became hysterical.”

Young said the 16-year-old had been pushed face-first into a store’s front glass. He suffered a swollen nose, a cut jaw, and his front teeth were pushed back.

“When I saw my son again, his whole mouth was bloody,” Young said. “From a mother’s standpoint, it was more than minor. It was pretty major.”

The mother and son experienced part of the mayhem at Mall St. Matthews that police said included several fights and hundreds of kids running through the mall.

Reverend Woodrow McElvaney, the teen’s grandfather said he wants this to send a message that more security is needed at the mall, as well as parental guidance.

“We have a lot of children that are way too young out shopping and being in these malls by themselves without supervision and they need to be supervised,” McElvaney said.

St. Matthews Police have said there will be some changes to the mall’s policy and rules as a result of Saturday night’s events. Those changes won't be revealed until a news conference Wednesday morning, a store manager told WDRB that it appears the mall will implement an age and time limit.

The news conference will be streamed live on WDRB.com.
