LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Oldham County residents voted to allow liquor sales across the county Tuesday.

Packaged alcohol can only be sold in La Grange right now, but the vote will allow sales throughout the county.

There are only a handful of places in Oldham County where you can buy packaged alcohol right now, but the Kentucky Artisan Distillery isn't one of them and the owner said he's been losing money because of it.

"I've had people do all the distilleries in the state and they say this is their favorite, but they always leave saying they wish they could get a taste. That's what people expect when they come to a distillery,” said Kentucky Artisan Distillery manager Liz Ratliff.

Some residents said the dry law has been taking business away from the county and Kentucky Artisan Distillery threatened to relocate if the law remained.

Many Oldham County residents say they have to drive to Jefferson County to buy alcohol and they say they'd rather that money be invested where they live.

The vote passed with 5,688 in favor and 3,420 against.

"I'm actually quite surprised. We had a little pool. I thought maybe it'd be around 5,000," Oldham County Clerk Julie Barr said. "So, it looks like -- just off the first look -- we have about a 20 percent turnout. I'm delighted."

No exact date has been set on when liquor will be available on store shelves. That decision is left to the Alcohol Beverage Commission, the county judge and fiscal court.
