UPDATE: Coroner's office identifies man killed in southwest Louisville house fire

Posted: Updated:

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A man is dead after a massive early morning fire engulfed his home on New Year's Day.

The fire trucks and firefighters are gone, but the damage is done, not only to the house, but to the family and friends of 61-year-old James Rockford Tucker.

Charred remnants of a roof, melted siding, a torched American flag: that was the aftermath of a fire that lit up a southwest Louisville neighborhood in the early hours of the morning on the first day of 2016.

"It was a pretty big fire," said neighbor Tina Clayton. "It was pretty massive."

Neighbors rushed to see if they could help.

"I got the people out of the house next door," said Clayton. "We didn't think anyone was home at first, but unfortunately, we did find out that he was."

And it was too late. His son, James Tucker Jr., tells us 61-year-old James "Rocky" Tucker died in his home of 15 years on Pendleton Road.

"It's a shame," said James Tucker Jr. "It's a crying shame what happened."

Investigators spent much of Friday morning sifting through Tucker's things, searching for clues that may tell them what happened. His son has a suspicion.

"If I know my dad, he probably had his stove on for heat," he said.

No matter how it happened, or why, this heartbroken man says he's going to hold on to the memories of shared fishing trips, and who his dad was -- and one thing he's already thankful for in the New Year is that last visit the two had yesterday.

"I'm so glad I got to see him right before and tell him that I loved him," he said.

Tucker's dog also died in the fire.
