Helen the gorilla celebrates 58th birthday at the Louisville Zoo

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- There's no better way to celebrate another year alive than by digging into a birthday cake with your bare hands.
That's how Helen the gorilla marked her 58th birthday Saturday at the Louisville Zoo.
She's one of the oldest gorillas in North America. The average age of gorillas in zoos is 38.
Helen celebrated her big day with a special hollowed out cake with fruit.
Guests also sang "Happy Birthday".
"It's wonderful," said David Guthrie. "It's one of our favorite things to do on the weekends. Charlotte loves coming to see the animals and see all the wildlife, so it's great for us. It's a great family activity."
Next week, the zoo will celebrate another birthday.
Qannik the polar bear will be turning 5.
She made national headlines in 2011 after being found on Alaska's North Slope, separated from her mother and sibling.
