Louisville edges past Wake Forest, 65-57, in ACC opener

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- The University of Louisville basketball team didn't make it easy on themselves in the first game of ACC play Sunday, narrowly edging Wake Forest, 65-57, at the KFC Yum! Center.

The Cardinals were led by sophomore Chinanu Onuaku, who finished with 12 points and 15 rebounds. Freshman Donovan Mitchell, in his first career collegiate start, added 18 points and seven rebounds.

U of L held a seven-point halftime lead, but the 9-3 Demon Deacons went on an 8-0 run midway through the second half to make the final five minutes much closer than some anticipated.

A few timely defensive stops after Wake Forest tied the game with less than 2:30 left in the game, as well as an acrobatic running layup by senior Damion Lee with one minute left, enabled the Cardinals to sneak away with their first conference win of the season.

U of L goes to 21-2 on the year. They to North Carolina State on Thursday to take on the Wolfpack on ESPN2.
