Bullitt County Sheriff: 'That clock's still ticking'

Posted: Updated:

SHEPHERDSVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- The Bullitt County Fiscal Court building was packed Tuesday morning, as officials voted to approve the budget requested by Bullitt County Sheriff Dave Greenwell. But the sheriff did not get everything he wanted.

Although the sheriff's budget was passed, the fiscal court chose not to commit to pay an estimated $640,000 deficit that the sheriff's office has incurred over the last three years. It is a deficit the sheriff says includes the everyday policing needs of his office.

The comes amid weeks of controversy, during which Sheriff Greenwell said his office would not continue to police the county unless his office's needs were met.

"That's the second part of the deal that has to be met," Sheriff Greenwell said. "When I told them that I was giving them 90 days notice at our last fiscal court meeting, that clock's still ticking. It's a two-part deal."

In the fiscal court's lengthy response last month, it said it supported the sheriff with approximately $2 million -- a number that Greenwell disputes. The sheriff did say he wanted an additional $250,000.

"Without prior notice and the surprise of the fiscal court members," the fiscal court statement said. "Sheriff Greenwell announced at the beginning of the Dec. 12, 2015 fiscal court meeting that he would cease his responsibility to provide law enforcement for the citizens of Bullitt County in 90 days and then he exited the meeting."

"The process is that we're working with him and hoping that he'll change his mind and do what he's paid to do -- or do his services to the county. If not, we'll have to go elsewhere," said Joe Rayhill, District 4 Magistrate.

If an agreement cannot be reached, the fiscal court says it will look to other law enforcement agencies to police the county.
