Ky. to offer gold star license plates for brothers and sisters of fallen soldiers

Posted: Updated:

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) – New Kentucky license plates will honor family members of those who lost their lives in war.

Families can now apply for the ‘gold star sibling’ plate, which honors the brothers and sisters of fallen soldiers.

The new plates were made possible by legislation that expanded eligibility for gold star plates to brothers and sisters of soldiers, which were first issued in 2006 to parents of fallen soldiers.

“We are grateful to the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet for helping us develop and offer a license plate that recognizes our Kentucky Gold Star Siblings.  We encourage everyone who sees a vehicle with one of these plates to take a moment to think about the sacrifice made for our country,” said Heather French Henry, commissioner of the Kentucky Department of Veterans Affairs (KDVA).

To get one, you have to fill out a Gold Star Sibling Affidavit and submit it to the Department of Veterans Affairs. The department will then give permission for the county clerk to issue a plate.

The plate costs $31, including a $10 donation to the Veterans’ Program Trust Fund. You can get one for passenger vehicles or motorcycles.

To get an application for the plate, you can visit http://veterans.ky.gov or call 502-564-9203, 1-800-572-6245.
