LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Louisville Metro Council has elected David Yates (D-District 25) as its new president.

Yates was elected to represent Auburndale, Pleasure Ridge Park, Parkridge, Prairie Village, Valley Station and Waverly Hills -- which make up District 25 -- in 2010.

"Congratulations to David Yates on his election as Metro Council President. We have much to accomplish in the year ahead and I look forward to working with President Yates and council members on behalf of all 760,000 citizens of Louisville," Louisville Mayor Greg Fischer said in a statement.

Yates serves as chair of committee on intergovernmental affairs, he's the vice chair of the public safety committe and represents Metro Council on the board for Greater Louisville, Inc.

Yates replaces David Tandy as the president of Metro Council. Tandy announced earlier in the week that he would not seek reelection
