Floyd Co. judge to attend State of the Union address

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- An Indiana woman will be a guest at the State of the Union address for her work to launch a groundbreaking program to help veterans.

Indiana U.S. Senator Joe Donnelly invited Floyd County Superior Court Judge Maria Granger as his guest to hear President Obama's speech.

She started Indiana's first veterans' court in 2011.

Serving in the military means veterans have gone through unique situations most civilians haven't.

The program gives vets facing charges the help they need and a chance to undergo counseling to get their lives back on track.

"Just being recognized as a pioneer in the veterans' courts movement is powerful, but that being the reason I'm here for the State of the Union is a phenomenal privilege I share with my fellow judges in Indiana," Judge Granger said.

The program has expanded to 15 courts in Indiana, with another nine in the planning stages.
