LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Andrew Smith, 25, died Tuesday after a on-and-off battle with cancer.
Smith was the star center on the Butler University basketball teams that lost in back-to-back national championship games in 2010 and 2011.
He was diagnosed non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma in January 2014. His wife Samantha tweeted the news Tuesday afternoon:
Andrew peacefully passed away in his sleep and in my arms as I told him I loved him this morning. Love you always, Smith.— Samantha Smith (@Samantha44Smith) January 12, 2016
After being considered cancer-free a year ago, Smith's family announced last week that Andrew's condition had quickly taken a turn.
Boston Celtics head coach Brad Stevens, who was Smith's coach at Butler, missed Thursday night's game to fly to Indiana and be with the Smith family.
Stevens tweeted his condolences Tuesday after news of Smith's passing:
To the toughest guy I ever met - Thank you, Andrew. We love you and will always be inspired by you.— Brad Stevens (@BCCoachStevens) January 12, 2016
Smith went to Covenant Christian High School in Indianapolis before going on to Butler. He played one year of professional basketball in Lithuania until being diagnosed.
