LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- The Harlem Globetrotters make their annual stop to Louisville this Sunday. Fun and basketball for all ages at the KFC Yum! Center starting at 2:00 pm.
In preparation for their visit, I got a chance to meet Zeus McClurkin. He once played for the Washington Generals, the team that for years was beaten night in an night out by the Globetrotters. McClurkin said he did his best to get noticed, mostly by dunking often and forcefully, and eventually was recruited to become a Trotter. In two years, the part-time minister has been to 17 countries, spreading the gospel of hoop.
McClurkin has also gained some renown from a record he set in November. He put his name in the Guinness Book of World Records for the most dunks in a one-minute period with 15. That included sprinting to the free throw line and back after each dunk, especially challenging when you include the fact that McClurkin has exercise-induced asthma.
On Tuesday, I got a few lessons from the 6'8" North Carolina A&T grad (where he played for former U of L Cardinal Jerry Eaves). We played a game of "Horse" (we called it "Globe"). I got a few letters on McClurkin, although he was being nice and he put me away by banking home a half-court underhand shot. Enjoy the video from our encounter and check out the Globetrotters this Sunday. I'm also going to get a quick stint on their opponents, the World All-Stars. It should be entertaining.
