With the recent switchover from Democrats to Republicans in many key Kentucky offices, a whole lot of priorities have changed in Frankfort. But at least one Republican plans to finish a job that was begun by his Democratic predecessor. New State Auditor Mike Harmon has announced he'll continue the examination begun by former Auditor Adam Edelen into the University of Louisville Foundation.
I think such an examination is good because U of L has been the recipient of a lot of bad press lately - some of it self-induced - and the best thing that could happen at the school right now would be the vindication that would come from getting a clean bill of health after undergoing a completely transparent investigation process.
I certainly don't suspect Foundation (and University) President James Ramsey of any fiscal shenanigans. But the financial procedures of any entity with assets of over a billion dollars are complicated. And - especially when the entity is part of a public institution - taxpayers should have some outside, reliable assurance it's being run in meticulous fashion.
Foundation Chairman Dr. Robert Hughes must believe this audit will provide such assurance because he was among the leading voices asking Harmon to continue with it, and I agree.
I'm Bill Lamb and that's my Point of View.
