LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Hundreds of trees will be planted on JCPS campuses over the next several months, in an effort to help reverse the city's fast-growing heat island effect.

Today, Louisville Mayor Greg Fischer was on hand for the announcement.

"Trees Louisville" plans to donate 800 trees to be put on 11 campuses over the next several months.  The trees will be planted near walking paths, playgrounds and parking lots.

The new trees are valued at $25,000.

Trees Louisville says the city's tree canopy cover is at 37 percent, but the recommended level is 40 percent.
