Louisville civil rights leader presented with Dr. Martin Luther King Freedom Award

Posted: Updated:

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A Louisville civil rights champion was honored with the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Freedom Award on Sunday.

George Burney received the award during the "Keepers of the Dream" community arts celebration.

Burney started the Martin Luther King Motorcade in Louisville 44 years ago.

And before that, he was part of a sit-in that led to the integration of the city's bus depot.

"He worked tirelessly to register minority voters and connect people to opportunities for education and jobs," Louisville Mayor Greg Fischer said.

Burney initially appointed Tom Wine as grand marshal of Monday's parade.

Wine has since stepped down.
