Jefferson Award: Local basketball coach works to be a role model and positive influence

Posted: Updated:

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A local basketball coach is teaching his players more than just how to play the game.

Our next Jefferson Award recipient is on a mission to make sure his players succeed in the game of life.

Meet Darryl Atkins. He's the head ball coach for the Southern Indian Rockets; an AAU team for 4th graders.

"He's a good coach. He teaches us things we need to know and pushes us to the limit," said one of his players.

Coach Darryl has been coaching youth baseball, football and basketball in Louisville and southern Indiana for 20 years.

Christina Estill's son is on the team. She nominated Coach Darryl for a Jefferson Award and believes wholeheartedly that he should be recognized for his outstanding community service.

She says he's a phenomenal coach. But more importantly, he's a positive role model and a man who genuinely cares about his players.

"It's nice that my son has a second family. If anything ever happened to me, I know that my son has someone positive and motivating that will always have his back no matter what," said Estill.

Here's what Coach Darryl had to say about why he's passionate about mentoring young boys.

"Some of these kids are growing up in hard homes. I want to be a positive role model and guide them. It's important they make good decisions in life."

The Jefferson Award is given to someone who is dedicated to selfless public service. That's exactly what coach Darryl has been doing for many, many years.

"It's an honor," said Coach Darryl.

After receiving the award, he made it very clear that he gets a lot of help from his wife Nicole.

She's responsible for scheduling practices, tournaments and making sure the players have everything they need. Teamwork makes the dream work.
