CRAWFORD | Pitino declines to address question about UNLV job interest

Posted: Updated:

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — Rick Pitino took nearly 23 minutes of questions on Tuesday, but took only about five seconds to reject a query about a recent report from the Las Vegas Review-Journal which quoted an unnamed source as saying Pitino would have interest in the UNLV coaching job.

Before the question was even out, Pitino jumped in, saying, “Next question, guys. Anybody have a basketball question about Florida State, I’d be glad to answer it, but please don’t talk about job openings in January — or resumes.”

The final phrase was referencing a question I’d asked him about the tendency of media outlets to begin focusing on NCAA Tournament “resumes” in January.

Of more interest to Louisville, fans, of course, will be Pitino’s decision not to address the UNLV report at all. When I asked him about the Las Vegas report of his potential interest, he only said, “No. The only thing I’m interested in is beating Florida State” on Wednesday.

I wrote this column about his answer then. The basics of that column are the same today.

Pitino has, in the past, made definitive statements about his desire to retire from Louisville. He signed a long-term contract extension last year.

He’s media savvy. He knows how to knock down a rumor. He’s done it before. And he knows how it will play if he doesn’t. He’s been down that road, too. If he wanted to make a definitive statement, he would.

But I think, given everything swirling at U of L right now, and not just in athletics, that nobody is making definitive statements about anything.
