I have no interest in taking any guns away from the millions of responsible Americans who have them, but it seems many on the pro-gun side aren't very concerned about that "responsible" part.
How else can you explain the outrage sparked by President Obama's recent Executive Order that simply attempts to close loopholes that make it far too easy for dangerous or incompetent people to get their hands on firearms?
Nothing in that order constitutes an attempt to confiscate any guns or bar their future sale.
It merely makes background checks apply to all gun buyers, requires licensing of all gun sellers instead of just some, streamlines data-sharing of criminal records between the federal government and the states and calls for more access to mental health resources and more research into gun safety.
If the debate were being controlled by responsible gun owners, none of this would be an issue, but the problem is that their voices are being drowned out by a minority of irresponsible radicals who dishonestly smear reasonable regulation as a government attempt to completely disarm the citizenry.
I know this isn't likely to change many minds, but it would be nice if it encouraged the majority of gun owners - the responsible ones - to speak up and stop allowing the crazies to make them look bad.
