Snow-covered rural roads close Bullitt County Schools for second day

SHEPHERDSVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- While many major roads are clear, it's those rural back roads still covered in snow and ice that cause dangerous driving conditions.

Bullitt County School officials called off for that very reason.

“The road that I live on was quite a bit nerve-racking,” Cory Shafer said.

It's a winter story Shafer knows all too well living off a rural Bullitt County Road for 10 years. With so many twisting roads there is uncertainty around every corner.

“I refer to it as death to the left and death to the right. We live up on a ridge so I mean either way if it isn't cleared off it gets uniquely entertaining,” Shafer said.

Bullitt County School Officials drove his road and many others checking out the snow and icy conditions. Then early Wednesday afternoon a second day of school was canceled for Thursday.

“It's just to the point where especially those rural areas, we know that those aren't going to be cleared and that's where our trouble areas are,” said Staci Goedde, Bullitt County Schools Transportation Director.

Trouble for drivers, but smiles for students.

“We've been playing in the snow and cleaning off other people's cars,” said Addison Shafer.

“I have been sledding,” said Ryan Shafer.

Shafer's children and their neighbor ran around and had snow ball fights while he very carefully made the drive home from work.

“We start out and try to get all the major roads, then from the major we go to the secondary roads,” said Hyte Rouse, Bullitt County Roads Director.

The Bullitt Count Roads Department hopes to have all roads cleared and salted by Thursday morning. Since Wednesday morning 600 tons of salt have been poured onto nearly 700 roads.

But in the meantime, the Shafers are just going to enjoy the aftermath of a winter storm.

“We're going to build a snowman,” said Shafer.

Whether or not students will have school on Friday has yet to be decided.
