Under threat of winter weather, Louisville grocery stores see surge

Posted: Updated:

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) – As a winter storm approaches, many people are braving crowds and are heading to grocery stores to stock their pantry’s.

“A mad house,” one shopper described the Poplar Level Rd. Kroger Thursday evening.

There is at least some science to explain why some feel the need to hurry to the grocery store ahead of one day of winter weather.

“There's a part of them that knows they're going to be okay,” said University if Louisville social communication professor Dr. Michael Cunningham.

“If you ask somebody, 'Are you sure you're going to make it?!' often times they will wonder, 'I don't know, maybe I need to stock up,’” Cunningham said.

Generally, when the average person knows an event (like snow) that will alter their daily life is going to happen, they feel the need prepare. No matter what it is.

“There's a surge of adrenaline,” Cunningham said. “Back in the old days, we would chop wood for the fireplace but we don't do that much anymore.”

So what do we do? We go to the grocery store.

“Well if the roof looks okay, you can't do much there,” Cunningham said. “You can’t shovel your driveway in advance.”

So Cunningham says its not a panic that sends people running to the shelves. Instead, it’s a greater sense of need and self-protection.

“I'm ready to go,” one shopper said “If we get it, we get it.”
