Kids don their pajamas to kick off Louisville public library book challenge

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- They put on their pajamas but did not climb into bed.

Instead, kids and their parents headed to the Louisville Free Public Library on Saturday.

Clifford the Big Red Dog kicked off the party for the library's "1,000 Books Before Kindergarten Challenge."

The program encourages families to read at least that many books before their kids head to school.

"These kids are reading, and all the data and all of our experience shows us that when you can have your child ready for kindergarten, ready to start learning how to read, it makes all the difference in the world in terms of their future," Louisville Mayor Greg Fischer said.

"So, anytime I can encourage adults to help their kids or grandkids learn how to read, it's a really important thing to do."

Event organizers say spending just 15 minutes a day reading to kids before they're in preschool builds their vocabulary and language skills.
