Clarksville hiring search firm to find new town manager

Posted: Updated:

CLARKSVILLE, Ind. (WDRB) - Clarksville's town council is looking to make a big change. A search committee's been formed to hire a town manager, a position that hasn't been filled in more than 30 years.

The town of Clarksville does not have full time leadership. Its seven council members are part-time, and most of them make under $14,000 a year.

"What you find when you have seven members of the council in a town ... all of the members all have equal voting rights where we are the executive,” said council president Paul Fetter."

That's why council members are looking for a town manager, someone who would basically serve as Clarksville's CEO.

The last time the town had that position was in the 1970s, and that person was appointed.

"We're looking for a professional with professional oversight,” Fetter said. “They'd have a degree in public administration, probably a second in business."

Fetter says the new hire would manage a $45 million budget, oversee departments like police and fire and also serve as a go-to for council members.

"What the town manager will do is centralize that focus, where they can talk to them, then they bring that information to the council. It makes their jobs easier and it also brings it in a more concise form to the council."

Fetter says the town manager would not be a voting member of the council, but would make recommendations.

They've already approved more than $22,000 to hire an out-of-state firm to find the right person for the job. So far, they’ve narrowed it down to a company in Illinois and another in Texas.

The local search committee will choose the firm in a about a week.

The council hopes to hire the town manager by April with that person starting by July 1.
