Firefighter bitten by dog while responding to house fire

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A house fire sends a man to the hospital and leaves a firefighter injured, but not from the flames.

Crews from several different departments went to a house on Brookridge Lane in Okolona on Monday morning.

Investigators say the man who lives at the residence can't walk, but was able to crawl to safety.

The man was found on his back porch and taken to University Hospital.

Firefighters got the flames under control, but had trouble handling the man's dog who tried to run back into the burning home.

"Some of our firefighters tried to help corral the dog out of the way and one of them was bitten and it was me, but everything is fine. The dog is great," said Mike Allendorf, Fire Marshal with the Okolona Fire Department.

The fire marshal hands had to be bandaged where he was bitten.

But again he says the man who lives there is believed to be fine and the dog is also okay.
