Louisville Lyft driver helps deliver baby, receives $250 compensation

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- For the first time ever, a baby was born during a Louisville Lyft ride.

"One of the most frequently asked questions when there's someone in the car is, 'What's been your most interesting experience?' and I say, 'Well, do you really want to know?'" said Jilson Daniels.

He just celebrated his first anniversary as a Lyft driver. It's a side gig for the financial consultant, but his last ride may have been the hardest job of his life.

"This is definitely on top of my never-forget moments in my life," Daniels said.

He received a ride request Friday evening, one that was about 20 minutes away from his current location. The passenger called him repeatedly to make sure he was on his way.

"He said, 'We're going to the ER. My girlfriend is having a baby.' And I said, 'Are you sure?'" Daniels explained.

The man on the phone was sure. His girlfriend was in labor.

"I got there, got out of my truck. She came out first. She was holding her stomach and I can tell she was in a little discomfort," said Daniels.

The ride down I-65 South went smoothly, but once they reached the Broadway exit, that ride intensified.

"She started off in the passenger seat behind me and she got up and somehow crawled in the third row bench seat," Daniels said. Once we got onto Chestnut, I pulled into the patient drop off area and was like, 'Okay, we're here.' She was like, 'I don't think this is the right spot.'"

In a panic, the driver circled around the block. When he looked back to see how his passenger was doing, he saw the head.

"So right here is where I saw the Kosair Children's Hospital emergency entrance and I said this is where we are going. Then she was really screaming.”

The father ran inside for help and several nurses rushed to the car.

"But it had already started happening. She had already started delivering the baby in my car," said Daniels.

The mother gave birth to Sandra Rose, 6.5 pounds and 20 inches long.

"I thought, wow. What if we had just been five minutes later? Who would have delivered the baby then? Probably me," Daniels said.

The next day, Sandra Rose received a special visit and care package from her very first Lyft driver.

"That was definitely a first for me," said Daniels. "This was definitely a way to cap off my one-year anniversary."

The baby is at Norton Hospital and should be going home soon.
