Walmart gives $1 million to Kosair Children's Hospital to fund trauma program

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Kosair Children's Hospital celebrates a generous gift from Walmart with a huge cake shaped like a $1 million check.

Walmart announced the donation Thursday morning, to help support the Level 1 Pediatric Trauma Center.

The hospital is home to the only pediatric trauma center in western Kentucky and Southern Indiana. Nearly 90,000 children a year seek care from the emergency medicine specialists of Kosair Children’s Hospital. Of those, more than 1,000 need the services of the downtown Level 1 Pediatric Trauma Center.

Hospital officials say the many resources needed to care for trauma cases are extensive and costly. Doctors say Walmart's support allows the unit to have what is necessary to care for children with all kinds of injuries.

"The work that the Foundation does and the work that you find people do to help us is tremendously important and we cannot thank you enough," said Dr. David Foley head of trauma services.

The donation is Walmart's second toward the Pediatric Trauma Center. The company also donated $1 million in 2011.
