Louisville Metro Animal Services has dogs looking for forever homes

Posted: Updated:

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- As of January 27, 2016, LMAS had over 90 animals that have spent 30+ days in the shelter. Of these, 65 are adoptable while the remainder are being held pending the outcome of court cases.

This is not a unique phenomenon for the Louisville shelter. It is representative of a bigger issue facing the plight of homeless animals across the country. The biggest risk factors to animals spending long period of time in a shelter is the risk of illness such as upper respiratory illness. The more animals that get sick while in the shelter increases the need for treatment and consequently can increase their stay even longer.  The longer an animal spends in a shelter, the greater their need for socialization and interaction with humans. This combined with the cost of animal care puts a heavy burden on any shelter system.

For whatever reason, these animals have been passed over - through no fault of their own. LMAS is offering big adoption discounts to help these animals find their forever homes. Check with LMAS for details as the adoption fees will differ depending on the pet.

Louisville Metro Animal Services (LMAS) is the only open intake shelter in Louisville Metro and the largest in Kentucky. LMAS is committed to caring for the almost 8,000 animals that enter the facility every year and giving them a second chance through adoption, rescue, reunification with owners and much more. The department is dedicated to educating and reaching out to all members of the community to make sure responsible pet ownership and compassion are at the forefront. LMAS has a fundamental mission to protect public health and safety, ensure the humane treatment of animals and provide quality customer service to the public. www.louisvilleky.gov/animalservices.
